Tips For Safe Holiday Shopping

It seems as though the holiday shopping season begins earlier each year, and with that in mind, it’s wise to make sure that you are taking adequate steps to protect your information online. While PyraMax Bank keeps our clients’ financial security as our top priority, cases of identity theft related to online shopping generally increase around the holidays, as more and more consumers take to the internet to find the best deals. Here are some simple steps that you can take to help ensure that your financial information is protected during the holiday shopping season.

Download the CardValet® App

Did you know that your PyraMax Bank debit card is able to be protected by the free CardValet® app? Available on both the App Store and Google Play, this app alerts you when transactions are performed, including online transactions. In the event of an unwanted transaction, you are also able to freeze your debit card usage to prevent fraud.

Look for secured domains

One letter can make a huge difference in your online shopping experience – “s”. While all websites are prefaced by “http” in the URL, only secured websites are given the preface of “https”. Be sure to check the address bar of your web browser for an “s” before entering any information. Unsecured websites that look like credible holiday shopping sites are often the work of criminals looking to copy an existing website to gain information. Many times, your web browser will also have an icon, such as a green checkmark or a shield in the address bar as well, indicating that the website you are shopping on is authentic and secured.

Be wary of email offers

Much like unsecured websites, instances of fraud via email are often increased during the holiday season, especially around Black Friday. Watch for misspellings and suspicious senders when checking your inbox for the latest deals, as these are general indicators of fraud. Do not open any email that appears to be suspicious, and always hover or hold your finger over a link before clicking on it. Hovering over links will show you the true URL that you will be directed to by clicking that link, and can help prevent you from being taken to a scam website.

If you see something, say something!

If you feel that there is possible fraudulent activity on any of your bank accounts, please report it to your local PyraMax Bank branch immediately. Our staff will swiftly take action on any fraud claims, and reporting a claim can help prevent any instances of a more widespread problem for all PyraMax Bank clients. While we take every step possible to protect your finances, your involvement can help bolster our security measures.
