Spring Cleaning Your Finances

Spring is considered a time to start fresh. Trees are in bloom, birds fly back to the Midwest once the cold months are over, and the weather begins to warm up. Spring can also be a great time to start fresh with your personal finance as well, now that the frantic spending of the holidays and the strain of tax season are behind us. Before we know it, though, summer will be here, and the added expense of going out more often to have fun will be hitting your wallet harder than the action in a summer blockbuster movie. Now is the perfect window to prepare yourself for the months ahead. Here are some tips to help you “spring clean” your personal finance situation:

Assess your financial habits

For many people, right now is a bit of a calm period when it comes to spending money, so it would be wise to take a look at the months ahead, when fun in the sun can come along with a price tag if you’re not careful. Look at your calendar. Do you know of any major festivals or events coming up? Are you planning a summer vacation for the family? If you start looking at these things now, you can prepare, and even save for them in advance!

Look at your house

With the weather getting warmer, many people like to take this time of year to work on upgrade their home. Take a look around. Are there any projects coming up in the next few months? Is there any maintenance that you may need to do, now that the snow and cold are (hopefully) gone until next winter? These are all things to consider, because often times repairs and home projects are not cheap. By figuring out how to finance these projects ahead of time, you’ll be giving yourself a great deal of help in the long run. You can also visit your local PyraMax Bank branch to discuss loan options for those major home renovations.

Budget for extra, unplanned expenses

All the planning in the world can’t necessarily save you from an unexpected situation. When setting a budget for the upcoming months, it might not hurt to allocate an extra dollar amount for the unexpected. Think about things that generally happen in the summer; could a heat wave cause your energy bill to go up, due to extra use of an air conditioner? Could a rainstorm destroy your patio furniture? Likely, these things won’t happen, but it never hurts to have a little bit of wiggle room in your budget. The beauty of this is, should nothing happen, you now have a rainy day fund for, well, just that!

A little planning can go a long way, and this would be a great time to start planning. By taking time to set a budget for yourself, you’ll be able to enjoy a stress-free summer! If you’d like to start saving with our help, as well, you can also contact a PyraMax Bank branch to discuss the right savings plan for you.
